Operating Instructions on Van de Graaff Generator

    I. Application Scope

Physical science courses in ordinary colleges & universities and high schools,   science classes in primary schools, as well as science and technology museums

II. Product Composition

See attached figure I:

Van de Graaff Generator consists of ①-electricity accumulating sphere, ②-stand, ③-base, ④-Discharge sphere and ⑤-control box.

For the composition of the control box, please refer to attached figure II and III.

Attached figure II:

The control box consists of 1-voltage tuning knob, 2-power switch, 3-air switch, 4-power

input receptacle and 5-power output receptacle.

III. Operating method of Van de Graaff Generator

1. The following works should be done prior to experiment:

 (1) Check ambient humidity first, as the experiment should only be conducted after

requirements of Van de Graaff Generator on environment are satisfied.

 (2) Wiring should be made as per attached figure I.

 (3) Turn the power switch to OFF, connect power plug to 220V power supply, so that the air switch is ON, and turn the voltage tuning knob to its minimum value (turn in a counter-clockwise manner).

 (4) Check whether receptacle and ground wire are connected well.

 (5) The distance between the control box and Van de Graaff Generator should be greater than 1.5m.

 (6) Place high insulating stand at position which is flush with the base of Van de Graaff Generator, then place short insulating to make it be in flush with the high insulating stand; finally, check whether the insulating stands are stable.

2. Trial operation: tun on power of controller, then electricity accumulating sphere will store electricity after a moment; at this time, the operator holds the back end of metal pole of the discharge sphere, the small metal sphere will gradually get close to the large sphere, and spark discharge will occur when the two spheres are in a certain distance from each other, which can be as long as over 200mm. Turn off the power to make the small discharge sphere contact with the large sphere so as to discharge residual electricity, then normal operation can be started.

3. Both the teacher and students participating in the experiment should all stand on the high insulating stand and hold the electricity accumulating with their hands (during the experiment, their hands must not leave the electricity accumulating sphere), and others should be away from the high insulating stand. The teacher then turns on the power switch to begin the experiment.

4. The voltage of the electricity accumulating sphere will rise when Van de Graaff Generator begins to work. Due that human bodies are also conductive, the electric charge will be transferred to human bodies, and hairs will stand on end as a result of mutual exclusion of electric charges on hairs.

5. When the experiment is finished, the teacher should firstly tun the power switch to OFF, then discharge residual electric charge on the electricity accumulating sphere with a metal needle. After that, the students participated in the experiment step down from the high insulating stand to the short one before they are down to the ground.

6. The next round of experiment will repeat the above steps.

7. Cautions:

 (1) Van de Graaff Generator is absolutely safe during operation; even if somebody is shocked, he or she will not be hurt.

 (2) The inside of the main body of the generator is ring sealed to ensure absolute dry inside the generator, please do not open the generator as it may cause bad effect.
