Two more patients have died in London hospitals after testing positive for coronavirus.

The news comes as the government confirmed this afternoon (Thursday March 12) that the total number of positive cases around the UK has risen to 590 – in the single biggest day-on-day increase so far.

The two most recent deaths occurred at Charing Cross Hospital in London and Queen’s Hospital in Romford, on the London-Essex border.

An 89-year-old patient “who was very unwell with underlying health conditions” died at Charing Cross while a woman in her 60s, who had “significant other health conditions” died in Romford.

In their update this afternoon, the Department of Health and Social Care said: “As of 9am March 12 2020, a total of 29,764 people have been tested. 29,174 negative and 590 positive.”

Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge has also confirmed they have a “likely positive” case, identified on one of the hospital’s isolation wards.
